You Don’t Need to Start Again on Monday

A different approach to health in midlife

How many times have you said to yourself…

“I’ll start again on Monday.”

Maybe you’ve had a busy week, missed a couple of workouts, eaten more chocolate than you planned or had a weekend away.

Suddenly it feels as though you’ve “fallen off the wagon” and need to start all over again.

But what if there was no wagon?

One of the biggest things I talk about with women through Thrivewell Coaching is moving away from the all-or-nothing approach to health and fitness.

Because life isn’t all or nothing – and our health doesn’t need to be either.

Midlife can change the rules

As we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, our bodies can start to feel different.

Perimenopause and menopause can bring changes to our sleep, energy, mood, body composition and confidence. Add in work, family, caring responsibilities and everyday stress, and suddenly the things that used to work for us may not feel quite so easy anymore.

That doesn’t mean we’ve failed.

It might simply mean we need a different approach.

For many women, doing more isn’t necessarily the answer.

Sometimes we need to look at how we are eating, how much we are moving, whether we are getting enough protein, how well we are sleeping and how much stress we are carrying.

And then start with one or two small changes.

Small steps really do count

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to improve your health.

A ten-minute walk counts.

Adding some protein to breakfast counts.

Doing a short strength workout counts.

Going to bed half an hour earlier counts.

Taking five minutes to breathe and switch off counts.

Choosing water instead of another fizzy drink counts.

And if you have a day when none of those things happen?

Tomorrow is another day. You haven’t ruined anything.

The small things we do consistently are often far more valuable than trying to be perfect for a couple of weeks and then giving up because it’s impossible to maintain.

Exercise shouldn’t be a punishment

I’ve worked in fitness for many years, and one thing I’m passionate about is helping women see exercise differently.

You don’t have to exercise simply to burn calories or make up for something you’ve eaten.

Movement is about so much more.

As we get older, strength training can help us maintain our muscle and support our bones. Pilates can help with strength, mobility, posture, balance and body awareness. Walking is fantastic for both our physical and mental wellbeing.

And perhaps most importantly – finding movement you actually enjoy makes it much easier to keep doing it.

That could be lifting weights, Pilates, walking, swimming, dancing, cycling or even learning something completely new.

There isn’t one perfect form of exercise.

Stop waiting for the perfect time

“I’ll start when work calms down.”

“I’ll start after my holiday.”

“I’ll start in January.”

“I’ll start on Monday.”

There will nearly always be something going on.

Instead of waiting for the perfect time, ask yourself:

What is one thing I could do for myself today?

Not ten things.

Just one.

Maybe it’s a walk at lunchtime.

Maybe it’s preparing tomorrow’s breakfast.

Maybe it’s picking up those dumbbells for ten minutes.

Maybe it’s simply getting an earlier night.

Health doesn’t have to begin with a huge transformation.

Sometimes it begins with one small decision.

Your health isn’t just a number on the scales

This is something I really want more women to hear.

Your health is also about feeling stronger.

Having more energy.

Sleeping better.

Being able to walk further.

Feeling more confident in your body.

Managing stress.

Keeping your independence as you get older.

Doing the things you enjoy.

And feeling like you again.

So if things haven’t quite gone to plan this week, please don’t write the whole week off.

You don’t need to punish yourself.

You don’t need another extreme diet.

And you definitely don’t need to wait until Monday.

Just choose your next small step.

Your health isn’t about being perfect. It’s about finding something that works for you, your body and your life.
